2019 Furman University LIASE Faculty Workshop

The LIASE Faculty Workshop focus on China’s environmental problems and challenges. It’s our pleasure to assist Furman University to arrange the workshop’s logistics and some activities. “Overall, we had a fabulous time though.”

 

Itinerary:

6/19 Wednesday Entry China

Arrive in Shanghai in the evening. The local guide meets you at the airport and accompany you to Guxiang Hotel Shanghai to check in.

 6/20 Thursday Shanghai

Visit Shanghai Museum, Urban Planning Museum and Yuyuan Garden. Enjoy Shanghai Acrobats at Shanghai Circus City in the evening.

 6/21 Friday Shanghai/Kunming

Take a morning flight to Kunming (KY8202   12:00/15:15). The local guide will meet you at the airport and accompany to Maple Hotel. Afternoon briefing at Yunnan Minzu University.

 6/22 Saturday Kunming

Meet with team of scientists and policy planners working to restore Dianchi Lake. Tour of the lake and conservation facilities. Explore Lao Yu He Wetland, one of eight such projects to filter Dianchi’s water natural, or the Kunming Waterfall Park. Visit the massive international wholesale market for flowers. The production of flowers for export has grown exponentially in Kunming over the last decade, as have the pesticides and fertilizers needed for that market. Visit the Ethnic Minority Village Park in Kunming and discuss the representation of ethnic minorities and the ethnic tourism market.

 6/23 Sunday Kunming

Explore the unique karst formations at Shilin Forest. Discuss the unique environmental challenges posed by karst landscapes. Afternoon visit to Yuantong Buddhist Temple in downtown Kunming.

 6/24 Monday Kunming

Briefing on Chenggong Urban Planning and Briefing at Yunnan Normal University on environmental education. 3:00 pm Meet with international scientists at the Yunnan Institute of Botany. Presentation on the ecology of Yunnan and the challenges of conservation and sustainable development

 6/25 Tuesday Kunming/Dali

Take a morning high-speed train to Dali (D8673) and transfer to Landscape Hotel Dali. Afternoon visit to Wild China NGO, founded by an internationally renowned wildlife photographer.

 6/26 Wednesday Dali

Visit the largest intact ethnic village in Yunnan-Zhoucheng to learn the art of indigo textiles and explore Xizhou Village. Then, visit the Erhai Lake Museum.

 6/27 Thursday Dali/Beijing

Visit a rural school and farm and fly to Beijing in the evening (MU9723  19:05/22:30). Beijing local guide meets you at the airport and accompany you to Jianguo Hotel Beijing.

 6/28 Friday  Beijing

This morning, visit the US Embassy for a briefing for environment, health, politics and economics in China. Then, visit the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE). Afternoon Ford Foundation briefing and briefing of the US-China Business Council

 6/29 Saturday Beijing

Tour Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, before dining in the famous Manchu-style restaurant in Beihai Park. This afternoon tour traditional hutong (alleyway) homes before the Beijing Duck Dinner and the Peking Opera.

 6/30 Sunday Beijing

Visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu and hike on the top of great wall! Lunch at the Brick Yard Restaurant.

 7/1 Monday Beijing

Visit China Education Association for International Exchange in the morning. Tour the Temple of Heaven and shop at Pearl Market in the afternoon.

 7/2 Tuesday Department

 Visit Lama Temple in the morning and transfer to the airport after lunch. (DL188 4:50 PM)
